No roofing underlay, what should I do?
Anonymous user 13/11/2025 - 3:50 PM
My roof has shingles but no underlay or barrier underneath. I’m planning to convert the attic into an office and was going to put up drywall. Should I add something first to protect the drywall from moisture in case water ever leaks through the shingles?
Are you a pro and able to answer this question?

Hi there
If the shingles are in good condition, don't worry. just caulk around the vent. clean the gutters too. on my profile you will see pictures of the roof, which is similar to your house. even though I replaced it, there was no water leakage after 25 years.

No underlayment? No problem! Felt paper or synthetic underlayment is only additional protection for workmanship errors or faulty shingles. Also for shingles that blow away in a windstorm.
An ice and water shield barrier (peel and stick membrane) is also something not to worry about. As long as you have proper ventilation and insulation inside your attic, you do not build up ice or ice dams, therefore protection is not needed.
Older generations didn’t use any underlayments!
