Freezer dedicated non-GFCI receptacle in basement

Pouyan 06/10/2026 - 2:33 PM

We would like to put a freezer in our unfinished basement. All the reciprocals are GFCI per code. We understand that most freezers generally do not perform well with these plug points (causes breaker tripping). Is it possible under code to install a single non GFCI receptacle dedicated for the freezer.

Are you a pro and able to answer this question?

A dedicated circuit may be a good solution, but whether a non-GFCI receptacle is permitted depends on the exact location and the applicable BC Electrical Code requirements. A dedicated circuit alone does not automatically make a non-GFCI receptacle acceptable. I recommend having a licensed electrician inspect the basement and determine the safest code-compliant solution for the freezer.

The micro electronics in a gfi protect you from a possible lethal shock ( often in damp area , basement or outside ) . If appliance is safe no problem , if gfi ( regulations for this style plug is to prevent problem shock ) keeps turning off circuit you have a problem that must be fixed for you safety . Older style breaker panel gfi like breakers did not always give proper protection , some time if you stirred a pot on a stove and you touched a sink you could get a shock , no gfi to protect you . The surface element was leaking and if tested you got a voltage to ground , not enough to blow fuse but enough to cause shock , had to replace element and check all others for problem . Hope this helps you to understand your question .

Yes, depending on the specifications the manufacturer states in owners manual. If that isn't followed, the warranty is void.

Installing a standard receptacle downstream of the existing GFCI so the freezer can be plugged into a regular outlet while maintaining protection from the upstream GFCI device
