Handyman vs Specialized Contractor: Which is Right for You?
Deciding between hiring a handyman or a specialized contractor depends on the type, complexity, and scale of your project.
When to Hire a Handyman
A handyman is ideal for handling a variety of smaller jobs, including:
- General repairs
- Routine maintenance
- Minor installations
- Seasonal upkeep
Handymen are typically cost-effective, charging hourly rates or flat fees for straightforward tasks. They're best suited for small to medium-scale projects that don’t require permits or licensed trade skills.
When to Hire a Specialized Contractor
For major renovations or complex tasks, a specialized contractor is the better choice.
This includes:
- Electrical rewiring
- Structural alterations
- Plumbing system overhauls
- Large-scale remodels
These professionals possess specific trade licenses, offer in-depth expertise, and often handle the necessary permits and compliance requirements. While they come at a higher cost, they ensure the job meets building regulations and safety standards.
Note: Assess the scale and demands of your project to choose the right service provider, ensuring each task is managed efficiently and cost-effectively.
HomeStars Tip: Edmonton handymen often take on appliance-related tasks, so if you’re updating your kitchen, why not add dishwasher installation to your list? Explore average dishwasher installation costs in our detailed price guide.
Handyman Licensing and Permits: What You Need to Know
When hiring a handyman, understanding the importance of licensing and permits is key. These ensure that the work complies with local building codes and regulations, which in turn assures safety and quality.
While many general handyman tasks may not require specific licences, certain jobs might necessitate them to comply with legal standards.
Electrical and Plumbing Work: Licensing is typically required. Handlers of these tasks must possess the proper qualifications to avoid legal issues and ensure safety.
Structural Modifications or Major Renovations: These often demand permits to align with city regulations and building codes. Lack of permits could lead to fines or mandatory reversals of work.
Gas Line Work: This requires specialized licensing due to the high-risk nature of the task. Compliance ensures both safety and legal adherence.
Note: Always verify your handyman's credentials for tasks that legally or safety-wise require a licence, to ensure your project is in good hands.

How to repair small ground level leak in exterior house wall causing water damage in basement?
Anonymous user 19/02/2026 - 9:16 AM
One corner of wall in our semi-below grade finished basement shows possible water damage from outside. At ground level and below it feels like soft spots in the drywall when we poke at it. Not a large space impacted I don’t think. The outside wall of the house at this spot has some damage so I’m sure water is getting in to the wall. What kind of contractor do we advertise for to fix this? Old house 1940s built.
