Company owner and project leader Matthew Gennaro was exposed to the construction industry at a young age, helping his contractor father with various home improvement projects from start to finish. After receiving his diploma in visual art, Matthew began painting professionally, first with his father, followed by various professional painting companies across the city of Toronto for the next 8 years in both commercial and residential settings (The City Painters, Theiner Painting, Paintech). He now operates The Good Painter which he founded in January of 2023.
Very happy customers. We hired Matthew after we had our condo flooring replaced to paint all our trim and doors and door frames. He was able to accommodate our tight schedule and complete the job within a couple days. He was a pleasure to have in our home. Trustworthy, efficient, friendly, quality work all around. Would highly recommend! He worked with existing trouble areas, replacing old caulking making it look clean and fresh. Cleanliness of work was impeccable. No mess or paint on our new flooring. We contacted Filadelfia after working with three other contractors we weren't satisfied with. (The first one, a kitchen reno, cut all the ground wires during his install - no idea why. We found out a year later and had to rewire the kitchen. The second turned a month-long job into a 6 month saga. The third built a deck that we had to have fixed only a year later.) Needless to say, I was cautious. You can tell Rodney and his team were going to be different from the second you meet them. People of a certain age will understand what I mean when I say they are about the 'old school' service: They did exactly what they said they were going to do. They quoted and stuck to the quote. They kept their word. They did good work. They were respectful of the neighbours. They finished earlier than they promised. The whole package. Whereas other contractors would send one or two people, disappear for a few days, and then get back to it, there were usually 3 to 6 people from the Filadelfia team onsite the entire time. They wanted to get the job done - and done well - and get on to the next one. That's how I work, and I appreciate it in others. We were initially interested a drywall installation after water damage in our powder room. I needed the fascia and wood trim replaced on an outside porch, as it was rotten. Calwyn gave me a quote and he answered my questions as to what types of material he would use, how long the job would take, etc. I felt confident that he knew how to do the job properly. In our approximately 175 SqFt. bedroom we had 3 ft of wainscoting around the room. We wanted to remove it and have new drywall installed (unfortunately the wainscoting was glued to the wall thus the drywall under it had to be removed). The owner was very friendly. It took him a day (with a helper) to remove the old drywall and install the new one. Here is where the issues occurred: 1) he did not take any of the garbage with him to dispose of, but left a ton of ripped garbage bags outside. When communicating with him before the project I asked (via WhatsApp) if the price included disposal and he said yes. I asked him about this and he thought that my garbage collection would take them. I informed him that garbage collection is every 2 weeks with a 3 bag limit. At that pace it would take a few months to get rid of them. He didn't seem to care and did nothing about it. Off to the dump for me. 2) The electrical outlets are recessed in the drywall and I will need to cut around the hole he made for them in order to access the screws so I can install an extender to bring them back out to level. 3) The job did not include sanding the new drywall at the joints, just the mudding. Are you serious? How can installing new drywall not include sanding the mud that was put on to make it smooth for painting. Plus, only one layer of mud was put on. From the little I know about drywall, you need to put multiple layers of mud on followed bu multiple sandings after in order to get a nice finish. When I asked him about this he said that it would be a painters job to do the sanding. He then offered to do the sanding and painting for an additional fee. I agreed as the price was not too high and I wanted to get this finished. He said it wouldn't take long as he has a 9" circular sanding machine. He said that it would be done the next day. When the next day arrived, I received a call from another individual who said he would be doing the sanding and painting and would be there soon. When he arrived, he had no sanding machine or materials. He didn't even have a paint brush. I asked him about this and he said that the owner told him that I have everything. Well I did have the paint. We both tried calling the owner with no success. Since that other individual was there, we went to a hardware store where I bought $50.00'ish of sanding and painting supplies. That other individual did the job in 4 hrs and it was not bad considering that there was only one layer of mud. But he was not a professional painter as there were lots of paint marks on the ceiling (which I will have to repaint myself) as he didn't use painter's tape. When everything was done, the drywall job itself was not horrible but not great as could see (in certain light) the small bulge around the room where the old drywall meets the new one. Not the perfectly smooth transition that you would want. As for the owner, he still has not responded to my messages.
