The reliable way to hire a pro

When a sole proprietor registers, we check available online sources to confirm that the address provided appears to exist. For pros operating through a registered company, we check that the company name, registration number and address listed in public corporate records match the details provided during sign-up. For all new sign-ups, we carry out background checks using third-party providers, including checks for criminal convictions where permitted under applicable Canadian law. For documents and registrations reviewed as part of these checks, we confirm that the name matches the name of the pro registered on the platform.

When a pro joins HomeStars, we ask for a valid ID — like a passport or driver's license.

For regulated and safety critical trades, we ask for qualifying documents (e.g. electricians license) and check that the activities listed match the trades the pro is registering for. When additional documentation is provided—such as confirmation of registration in a trade register or of completed training—we cross-check these against the services the pro is registering for to ensure consistency and authenticity. In addition, for certain jobs, we have pros pass an online skills check before responding to jobs in the following categories.

We take prompt and effective action on issues identified through our complaints process or monitoring activities. If someone doesn't meet our standards, they are removed from HomeStars.
