Hi There, If you wish to test whether your trim boards contain oil-based or latex paint, you are welcome to proceed with the following steps: 1-Grab a piece of cotton. 2-Pour rubbing alcohol onto the cotton. 3-Rub it on a hidden section of the trim for 10–15 seconds. Conclusions: **If the coating surface of the trim softens, smudges, or transfers to the cotton: Latex paint. **If the coating surface of the trim does not react: Oil-based.

1.Rubbing Alcohol Test - Rub a small hidden area with rubbing alcohol or acetone. If paint softens or comes off, it’s latex. If nothing happens, it’s oilbased. 2.Scratch Test - Oil paint is hard and chips cleanly. Latex is softer and peels or dents. 3.Age and Color - Older homes often used oil. Oil paint yellows with age; latex stays white. 4.Finish - Oil paint is smooth and glossy. latex has a softer look with visible brush marks.

Dampen a rag or cotton ball with rubbing alcohol. Rub a small, inconspicuous area of the trim. If the paint softens or comes off, it’s latex (water-based). If nothing happens, it’s likely oil-based. Note: Oil-based paint is not soluble in alcohol but is soluble in mineral spirits or paint thinner.

Rub trim gently with a clean white cotton rag that has methyl hydrate on it. If the paint comes off, it's latex. If it doesn't, it's oil.

Rub a small hidden spot on the trim. If the paint softens, smears, or comes off → it’s latex paint. If nothing happens → it’s oil-based paint.
