Extension of Garage
Anonymous user 23/12/2025 - 9:22 AM
I have a two car garage with two doors. I would like to explore an idea of extending the length of a garage ( on driveway to match house edge) and replace the two doors with a single large door. Is that possible? Will I need structural evaluation for this? There is a room above existing garage, which can kept as not extended to avoid complications.
Are you a pro and able to answer this question?

Hello. To make structural alterations to your garage I will recommend first consulting with 2-3 (depending on your availability) general contracting companies, like us. The first step of the project will be obtaining the structural permit from the City (don't overpay for the permits; and try using structural engineers versus architects etc.). The consultation with general contractor will give you an idea of how much this extension will cost and if it is even worth it.
And if you are looking for a short answer: everything is possible, if there are funds for it.

Hi there,
The idea you’re considering is generally possible, but since there’s a room above the garage, a structural evaluation is usually required. A qualified structural engineer or licensed contractor would need to assess the load‑bearing wall and header to confirm what changes can be safely made.🏠
Replacing two doors with one larger door is also commonly done, but again it depends on the current structure.
If you’re in the Ottawa area, I can help with an initial look and guidance, and connect you with the right specialist if needed.🤝🏻

Extending the Garage Forward
- Extending the garage toward the driveway to align with the house’s front edge is structurally feasible, especially if you're not altering the room above. You'll need to check local zoning bylaws in your city to ensure the extension doesn’t violate front yard setback requirements or exceed lot coverage limits.
Replacing Two Doors with One Large Door
- Removing the center post between the two existing doors means the load above must be redistributed. A structural beam will need to span the new wider opening to carry the load from the room above. This is a common solution but must be engineered properly.
Will you need a structural evaluation?
Yes, Since there’s a load-bearing wall involved (supporting the room above), a structural engineer must assess the current load and specify the correct beam size and support posts.
You’ll need a building permit for both the extension and the structural modification.
