Can I install new vinyl flooring on top of the existing one?
Anonymous user 27/10/2025 - 9:49 AM
I've got some old vinyl flooring that's still in good shape, no rips or anything. Can I just install new vinyl right over it? There's lots of space under the doors and where it meets the carpet in the other rooms.
Are you a pro and able to answer this question?

Hi,
There are no simple quick answers to most of the questions here.
The answer is: It depends.
At least on whether the existing vinyl floor is glued down or floating, that you didn't mention/specify.
IF it is floating no professional should install a new floor on top. Period. As a DIY (doing it for yourself) you can do whatever you want. Physically it is possible.
IF it (the existing) is glued down and as you write it is down solid (without movement or cracks), including any joints that it may have, you can install without concern a proper Floating floor on top, understanding that IF you want the new material's or a professional's labour warranty, than the flatness of the entire existing vinyl subfloor MAY need to be patched to be able to install over said FLAT subfloor (within a certain tolerance, basic industry standard is usually 1/8" (3mm) in any 8ft (2.5m) span of floor), but specific suppliers can specify different requirement for their warranty to apply, although it will be close.
IF warranties are not a concern you can install floating over it as is.
OR you can glue down a new vinyl floor, but only AFTER Skim coating (using for example "Ardex Feather finish") the surface of the existing to fill in the grooves, patterns creating a smooth surface, not necessarily flat, so it may not comply with warranty requirements, to which the gluing can be done. Never locate a seam on to of an existing seam.
Hopefully the above detailed answer was helpful. If yes, please Like it below.

You can float a vinyl floor over an existing glued down vinyl only . You can glue a new vinyl floor to either. I would scuff up the existing vinyl floor first if you are gluing to it

If your old vinyl floor is still in good condition (no cracks, rips, or loose spots), the answer depends on how the existing vinyl was installed:
1. If the old vinyl is glued down:
✅ Yes, you can install new vinyl over it.
• Floating installation: You can float the new vinyl over the old one as long as the surface is flat and solid.
• Glue-down installation: You can also glue new vinyl on top, but first you should apply a skim coat (for example Ardex Feather Finish) to fill in any grooves or patterns and create a smooth surface for the glue to bond properly.
2. If the old vinyl is a floating floor:
❌ No, you shouldn’t install another floating floor over it. Two floating layers can move independently, cause noise, and eventually damage the seams.
🔧 Tips:
• Make sure the old floor is solid and doesn’t flex or shift.
• If you want to keep the manufacturer’s warranty, the subfloor flatness should be within the standard tolerance (no more than 1/8” or 3 mm difference over any 8 ft or 2.5 m span).
• Never line up the seams of the new vinyl directly over the seams of the old vinyl.
Good luck 😎
