What’s the best way to close off an unused fireplace?

Anonymous user 10/10/2025 - 9:57 AM

We found an old fireplace in one of our bedrooms and have no interest in restoring it. We're thinking of sealing it off and plastering the area so we can place furniture against it. Any advice?

Best way is to make sure you are properly sealing and insulating the termination point to avoid pest , air leakage and moisture damage . Then add more insulation where the old fireplace opening use to be and close it with any preferred materials.

If you’re not planning to use the old fireplace, that’s totally fine. You can close it off and make the wall look smooth again. Just make sure you do it the right way so you don’t get damp or bad smells later. First, have someone **check the chimney** to be sure it’s dry and safe. Then, ask them to **put a vented cap on top** of the chimney. That keeps rain out but still lets air move. Next, you can **cover the fireplace opening** with a piece of plasterboard or wood. It’s a good idea to **add a small air vent** at the bottom of that cover, so the space inside can breathe. If it feels drafty, they can put a little insulation inside before closing it. After that, the wall can be **plastered and painted** like the rest of the room. Once it’s done and dry, you can put your furniture right in front of it — no problem. It’ll look clean and neat, and you won’t have to worry about the fireplace anymore.
