Installed ceiling light but it won't turn off!

Anonymous user 10/11/2025 - 10:16 AM

We have two ceiling lights in our hallway, both connected to the same switch. My partner had no issues installing the first one, but when he put up the second, the lights stay on and won't turn off when we flick the switch. There are a lot of wires coming from the ceiling (4 red, 4 black, and 4 bare ground wires). Does anyone have any quick tips on how to resolve this?

If the new ceiling light stays on all the time, it means the fixture was connected to a constant hot wire instead of the switched hot. In your ceiling box you likely have: • Black = constant hot • Red = switched hot (from the wall switch) • Bare = ground For a light controlled by a switch, the fixture must be connected to the red (switched) wire, not the black. What probably happened: When installing the second light, the fixture’s hot wire was tied into the black group instead of the red, so it receives power all the time. How to fix it: 1. Turn power off at the breaker. 2. Separate and identify the switched hot (usually the red wire). 3. Connect the fixture hot wire to the red wire. 4. Connect all neutrals (white) together. 5. Connect all grounds together. Because you have multiple cables in the box, the wiring can be confusing. If you’re unsure which conductor is the switched hot, it’s safer to have a licensed electrician confirm — especially since miswiring can cause other issues.
