How can I locate the position of an access cover?
Anonymous user 07/01/2026 - 9:24 AM
I'm dealing with a blocked drain at home and I can't find where my access point or cleanout is located. Does anyone have any tips on how to locate it?
Are you a pro and able to answer this question?

Most cleanouts or access covers are along the main drain line, usually near the foundation, in the basement, or outside close to the house. In a basement, check along the walls where the main stack or soil pipe runs. Outside, look near the foundation or sidewalk for a round or square cover, sometimes labeled “sewer” or “cleanout.”
If you still can’t find it, a plumber can use a camera or tracing tools to locate it without digging blindly. Avoid guessing the location, because cutting into the wrong pipe can create bigger problems.

Start inside the house. Most cleanouts are in the basement, utility/mechanical room, near a floor drain, or behind a toilet. Look for a round or square cap.
If you don’t find it inside, check outside the house. Cleanouts are often near the foundation, front of the house, or in the yard. Sometimes they’re covered by soil or grass, with only a small plastic or metal cap visible.
In older homes, there may be no cleanout at all, or it may be buried under flooring.
If you still can’t find it using a drain camera can be helpful

Homes with a basement have a area where you can undo the clean-out on the main to unblock or inspect.
