Built-In vs. Freestanding: How Do Installation Costs Compare?
When considering a dishwasher installation, deciding between a built-in and a freestanding model is key. Built-in dishwashers are integrated into your kitchen's cabinetry, offering a seamless look while often being quieter. However, freestanding dishwashers are more versatile in placement and can be moved if necessary.
In terms of cost, built-in dishwasher installations are generally more expensive due to the need for professional fitting into cabinetry. Prices can range from $250 to $800, depending on the complexity of the work and whether cabinetry modifications or upgrades to plumbing or electrical systems are needed. By contrast, freestanding dishwashers tend to be simpler and more affordable to install, with typical costs ranging from $100 to $300. These models often require minimal alterations, making them a budget-friendly option, especially in kitchens without custom cabinetry. Both types require proper electrical and plumbing connections, but the installation cost depends heavily on the model and your existing kitchen configuration.
Hidden Costs: Watch Out for These Additional Expenses
When planning for dishwasher installation, be aware of hidden costs that can emerge unexpectedly, increasing your overall expenditure. Understanding these potential additional expenses can help you budget more effectively.
- Plumbing Upgrades: If your home's existing plumbing is outdated or insufficient for a dishwasher, you might need to invest in plumbing upgrades, which could add significant costs.
- Electrical Updates: Older homes may require upgrades to the electrical system or additional circuits to safely accommodate the dishwasher’s power requirements.
- Ventilation Enhancements: Ensuring adequate ventilation might necessitate modifications, particularly in enclosed spaces, contributing to higher overall costs.
- Structural Modifications: Adjustments to your kitchen cabinetry or countertops to fit the dishwasher can add $100 to $500 to the installation costs.

Can I legally install a washing machine in my bathroom?
Anonymous user 12/11/2025 - 9:33 AM
Hello, I'm thinking about installing a washing machine in my bathroom. The plan is to run the power cable through a small hole in the wall to an outlet that's on the other side of the bathroom. The machine will be more than 1.2 metres from the edge of the tub and about half a metre from the toilet. Just wondering if this setup is up to code?

Lights aren't working, but outlets are fine and breaker hasn't tripped?
Anonymous user 10/11/2025 - 10:18 AM
I went to use the bathroom in the house addition today and the lights wouldn't turn on. The same thing with the other lights in the main addition but all the plug outlets are working just fine. I checked the breaker panel and all the switches are in the on position, nothing seems to have tripped. I tried turning it off and back on again but I'm not sure what else to do. Nothing's been damaged or altered and everything was working fine last night so I'm puzzled. Any advice on what the issue could be and how to fix it?

Installed ceiling light but it won't turn off!
Anonymous user 10/11/2025 - 10:16 AM
We have two ceiling lights in our hallway, both connected to the same switch. My partner had no issues installing the first one, but when he put up the second, the lights stay on and won't turn off when we flick the switch. There are a lot of wires coming from the ceiling (4 red, 4 black, and 4 bare ground wires). Does anyone have any quick tips on how to resolve this?
