Update - November 2019
Since my previous review on Home Painters, the owner Brian reached out to me again to try and make amends for the horrible experience my family had. He was quite apologetic about the poor quality of service we received. While he couldn't of course change what had happened, he did offer me a financial credit as a token of good faith that the company does take complaints about any project seriously. He also was more than willing to work with my family again in the future, if we so choose, and offer reduced pricing on our next project. He left the decision up to us, but his offer did impress upon me that more than just "I'm sorry " is offered when things go awry on a project. I believe principle still means something to Brian, and that is a good thing.

My parents are seniors who live in a 40+ year old home in East Toronto and the family wanted to paint most of the 2 main floors of the home (except kitchen and bathrooms, and 1 bedroom). The painting was part of the preparation for selling the home in the near future. I did a blind Google search and I chose Home Painters Toronto because of all the highly-rated reviews. Despite the mainly glowing reviews, I got a 2-man team that did some of the most sloppy and unprofessional painting I've ever seen! It started on day 1 of the project when supervisor Rocco called me to tell me the paint team's car broke down and they couldn't come until the next day. It all went down-hill from there. What was quoted as a 4-5 day job kept going for almost 2 months, holding up other smaller reno projects to be done in the home. I can't even begin to express my shock and disappointment at the outcome of the job after the initial four and one-half days. Despite daily texts and extensive phone calls with feedback and comments on the project with the lead painter, it was clear to me the this-two man team had little to no experience for the scale of the job and complete lack of pride in their workmanship. Dirty rollers were used for wall painting (particles and rough clumps were visible on the finished paint), paint drops and flecks were splattered on the hardwood floors and trim, on the interlocking brick front walkway(!), on the corner of the living room TV, paint was smeared across the glass of the front door and a bedroom window, on the stair railings, and I could go on and on. It was utterly unbelievable - and this was what my elderly parents were paying for out of their pension income! It was completely unacceptable. My husband and I were utterly exasperated and fed up with the painter's promises that he could fix things and excuses as to why the job was so hard. No, this job was far beyond him and his partner's abilities and I could not believe that this team was sent out to do other work prior. After arranging to have my parents' caregiver shuffle my elderly parents around in their home to accommodate the areas being painted and still have the home look woefully unsatisfactory, I had no choice but to contact the company to complain and say I did not want this team back in my parents' home and required all the work corrected - and it was a lot to redo and correct! Sanding, patching, caulking - everything.
To their credit, after I emailed the company with my extensive complaints, complete with many photos of the "finished" job that I took, supervisor Jackie contacted me right away. She and Darren came to the home multiple times to oversee all the deficiencies were corrected. Jackie kept in touch with me regularly, encouraging me or a family member to visit the home to point out any remaining areas missed and assured me the job wasn't complete until we were satisfied. Darren was amazing. He worked tirelessly to correct all the work and bring each area up to a more professional standard. My husband is in the trades himself and he knows how difficult it is to correct a job someone else has badly botched and he, a perfectionist himself, was very impressed with Darren's work ethic and attention to detail. IF ONLY we had Darren and his crew from the start! As I said, it took several repeat visits and many phone calls (including a discussion with owner Brian) before the job was sufficient enough for us to be ok with it. After almost 2 months, we just needed to move on as other work was delayed in the home because of this project.
Overall, I do have to say the customer service certainly lived up to the high ratings, but in the end, our project was a complete disaster first time around. My husband and I live in Hamilton and had to make several trips to visit the home in Scarborough to check the work week after week. For all the time and frustration this project took, I can't in all honesty say I'd recommend this company to someone else. Maybe we just had the worst luck and I'm glad so many others were thrilled with this company, but our overall experience wasn't favourable.
