What’s the safest way to disconnect my home security system?

Anonymous user 18/03/2026 - 1:22 PM

I have an older wired DSC alarm system that I’d like to replace with a wireless one. The system has room sensors, panic buttons, sirens, an outdoor box, and an indoor keypad. All the wiring runs into the keypad, which is next to the electrical panel. I’m worried about accidentally triggering the alarm if I disconnect it, and I know there’s a backup battery as well. What’s the safest way to shut it down and remove it?

Remove the power supply (white transformer) typically plugged into an electrical wall outlet. Then locate the black 4-amp battery inside the metal cabinet. Disconnect the red cable from the battery terminal. The system is now dead.

Many homeowners underestimate the value of existing wired alarm systems despite their age. Alarm system professionals can re-used these wires to build a better and more reliable security system than those dependent on wireless and battery sensors alone. Consider your options before removal or disconnection.
