Front window condensation

Ramona Pannewitz 28/10/2025 - 1:32 PM

We just noticed that our front double paned window has condensation forming at the top of it. It is a 20 year old vinyl window that probably has a broken seal. This living room window is a larger middle one, with two smaller ones on each side. Can this be fixed? Thanks

It sounds like the seal between the glass panes has failed, which happens over time as the window ages. When that seal breaks, the gas that insulates the panes leaks out and moisture gets in, causing the condensation you’re seeing. Some companies can defog the window by drilling a small hole and drying it out, but that’s usually a short term fix. The best option I recommend is to replace the window pane, as long as the frame itself is still in good shape. If the frame is warped or damaged though, it might be time to replace the whole window assembly.

If the condensation is between the glass panes then yes this could mean a seal failure. You could replace the glass if frames are still good or it may be time for a replacement. If the condensation is only on the exterior pane it may be due to a temperature change. But if it doesn't go away, I would recommend having someone look into it. Depending where you are located I'm sure Homestars has a professional that can help you out.
