Can I install vinyl flooring over existing laminate flooring?

Anonymous user 29/04/2026 - 3:51 PM

Just moved into a new home and I'm really not loving the colour of the laminate floors. Is it possible to lay vinyl flooring right on top of the laminate? Asking to know if can avoid taking off the baseboards and removing the laminate.

Are you a pro and able to answer this question?

I would definitely recommend removing it first. It is surprisingly quick to do once you get the first piece or two up (start at a vent). This will avoid having two floors which could potentially fail in the future and allow you to address any issues with the subfloor such as squeaks. Shoemold could be added if you wish to leave the baseboard in place, removing it will require some wall painting as the floor will be a bit lower. The only concern you may have is at your doors. If your door jambs have been cut to install the current laminate, there will be a small gap.

You can glue a vinyl to it if it’s in good shape. Scuff it up first. Never install a floating floor over an existing floating floor, though

Yes, in many cases vinyl flooring can be installed over laminate, provided that the existing laminate floor is flat, stable, and in good condition with no movement, swelling, or damage. If you really prefer not to remove the baseboards, at the very least the shoe moulding (the small trim piece at the bottom of the baseboard) should be removed first. The vinyl flooring can then be installed, and the shoe moulding reinstalled afterward to cover the expansion gap. That said, shoe moulding is quite thin, so sometimes it may not fully cover the new floor thickness and small gaps can appear along the edges. Because of that, it’s usually not the most recommended approach, but in the worst case it can still work if you’re trying to avoid removing the baseboards.

In some cases, yes—vinyl flooring can be installed over laminate, but it depends on the condition and type of the existing floor. The main factors are: - The laminate must be firmly secured (no movement, lifting, or damage). - The surface needs to be flat and even (any gaps, swelling, or uneven areas will show through vinyl). - Height buildup needs to be considered (doors, transitions, and appliances may need adjustments). That said, while it’s possible, it’s not always the preferred method. Most manufacturers recommend installing vinyl over a proper underlayment or directly over a clean, prepped subfloor for best long-term performance. In many cases, removing the laminate is still the better option if you want a cleaner finish and fewer issues down the road—but if the existing floor is in excellent shape, a floating vinyl install over top can work. Baseboards usually still need to be addressed either way, since flooring height changes will affect the trim detail. If you’re unsure, it’s worth having someone take a look in person to confirm whether your specific floor is suitable for an overlay installation.

You can put vinyl over laminate, but it’s almost never a great idea. Laminate is a floating floor, and most vinyl is also floating, meant to go over something solid, so you end up stacking one floating floor on another which can lead to movement, joint issues, and sometimes warranty problems. If the laminate is in really good shape, flat, and you’re using a rigid vinyl, it can work as a bit of a shortcut, but it’s not best practice. The proper way is to pull the laminate and install on the subfloor so it stays solid long-term. As for baseboards, you don’t always have to remove them… a lot of the time you can leave them and add a small trim like quarter round, but if you want the cleanest finish, taking them off and reinstalling is the better route.

Not recommend if you're looking for durability and a long-lasting result. Removing the vinyl or luminate is not hard or expensive. The current baseboards can be removed carefully and reinstalled over the new flooring to reduce the cost.

Highly would suggest to remove it, first you do have the chance to swee what is going on, under your flooring, for example mold, mildew and floor damages that could be fixed. If there was such an incident, or something poured into the cracks, smell is gonna remain there, so better remove the stain and do the floor on top of plywood, or might even end up removing that plywood. Third reason is weight. You would always want the load on the house to be lighter, you want to add weight to the house, you remove weight from the house! But it is being done by some contractors, and yes it is doable, and no its not ethical :)

Yes, in many cases vinyl flooring can be installed over existing laminate if the surface is solid, level, and in good condition. We just need to check the final height and make sure doors will still open properly. For a cleaner finish, it’s usually best to remove and reinstall the baseboards.AMIRI Developments Inc.

Installing vinyl flooring over existing laminate is possible and can help save on demolition and labor costs. However, it depends on the current floor condition. If the laminate is flat, solid, and undamaged, we can install directly over it without removing the baseboards, using trim to finish the edges. That said, for the best long-term result, removing the laminate is still the more reliable option. I’d be happy to assess your floor and recommend the most cost-effective approach for your situation.

Best practice is to remove the existing flooring. Depending on how tight the baseboards have been installed you may not need to remove it in most areas to get the existing flooring out, however you’ll most likely want to for the reinstallation process. When it comes to floating floor systems, you don’t want to install them over top of each other. Also check the warranty on the flooring as it could void any coverage you get on future failures.

Can you yes, should you absolutely not. You should never install any type of flooring over a floating floor this will allow movement of “subfloor” no floor would be warrantied in these circumstances.

Hello, congratulations on your new home! Yes, in many cases vinyl flooring can be installed over laminate, as long as the existing floor is flat, stable, and in good condition with no moisture damage or movement. However, we usually recommend removing the laminate for the best and longest-lasting result. It also helps avoid issues with floor height and door clearance. If you’d like, you can send a few photos of the current floor and the room, and I’d be happy to take a look and suggest the best option for your space.

Yes, you can install vinyl flooring over existing laminate, as long as the laminate is in good condition — no major gaps, lifting, or uneven areas. If the floor is level and stable, you don’t need to remove the laminate, so it can save time and effort.

There are no short simple answers to most of the questions here. The answer is: Depends! If you want a good and warrant-able job done you should NEVER install anything on top of a FLOATING floor. Laminate IS a floating floor. Period. Having written the above, physically you can do whatever you want. It is all about your expectations and frankly your budget. NO professional should ever do this for you at any price, but if this is what you want and don't care about the possible future consequences, it can be done, but not only by having it glued down as I read in another answer here, but floating it as well. at the very least in a perpendicular direction (90 degrees to the direction of the current flooring). Again, NO professional should take money for this and do it, but physically it is possible. Why not. If you come into our store and ask us to do this for you we would respectfully decline at any price. We would never put our name and reputation behind something like this.
