Painting

Poor job

Anonymous user 09/01/2026 - 8:19 AM

Hi I hired someone to paint and put trim on my stairs, I believe all stairs was the company, upon closer inspection I discovered that a huge gap was left alongside my stairs with the contractor did not tell me about it before he left. Is there any way to rectify this?

Are you a pro and able to answer this question?

Sorry to say but that is what you get when you do a finishing carpenter's job by a painter. There is always a solution for it.

Hi there — sorry to hear you’re dealing with this. Unfortunately, both of the items you mentioned are valid concerns, but they can be addressed. Regarding the gap along the stairs: Gaps along stair stringers or trim are fairly common, especially in older homes where walls and stairs aren’t perfectly straight. That said, it should never be left without discussion. In most cases, this can be rectified by: Adding a scribe moulding or shoe moulding Proper caulking and finishing, followed by paint In some cases, re-cutting or adjusting the trim for a tighter fit A professional contractor should explain the condition before finishing and offer options so you can decide how it’s handled. Regarding the space heater: Leaving a space heater on overnight without informing the homeowner is not right and could be a legitimate safety concern. Temporary heat is sometimes required for paint or trim work, but: -It should be approved by the homeowner -It should be monitored or thermostatically controlled -Fire safety protocols should always be followed What we recommend you do next: Document everything — take clear photos of the gap and note the heater issue in writing. Contact the contractor immediately and request a walkthrough and correction plan. Ask for the repair details to be confirmed in writing (scope, method, and timeline). If they’re unresponsive or dismissive, you may want to seek a second professional opinion to understand proper remediation. Good contractors stand behind their work and address concerns transparently. Hopefully this is something that can be corrected quickly and professionally for you. Wishing you the best in getting this resolved. The picture is not very clear, but it seems there was a lack of attention to details. It is important to know if the stairs are stained and the trim painted or all. Depending on the circumstances is to find out if the gaps alongside need to be caulked or receive a wood filling to match the stairs. I hope it makes sense.
