For a basement shower, I'd recommend matte finish tiles over polyurethane coating.
Why matte Tiles:
Better slip resistance when wet (important for safety)
More durable for daily shower use
Easier to maintain long-term
Standard choice for shower installations
Key for basement showers:
Ensure proper waterproofing is installed beneath the tiles. Basements are prone to moisture issues, so a quality waterproof membrane and good ventilation are essential.
About polyurethane: While it creates a waterproof surface, it's typically used for tub refinishing rather than shower areas. It can be slippery and may not hold up as well to regular shower use.
Bottom line: Choose porcelain or ceramic matt tiles rated for wet areas (COF 0.6+), installed over proper waterproofing. This gives you the best combination of safety and durability.
