Cold air coming through a new French door, even after replacing the weatherstripping, is usually not a door defect but an installation or air-sealing issue. The most common causes are: 1-Gaps around the door frame inside the wall cavity. Builders often use little or no insulation, allowing cold air to travel behind the trim and enter the home. 2-Door frame misalignment, which prevents the weatherstripping from sealing evenly. 3-Low-quality or compressed weatherstripping that does not maintain proper contact in cold temperatures. 4-Threshold and door sweep issues, which are frequent sources of drafts. 5-Failed exterior caulking, allowing cold air to enter the wall system. In most cases, the solution involves air-sealing behind the trim, realigning the door, upgrading weatherstripping, and adjusting the threshold. When installed and sealed correctly, a French door should not allow noticeable cold air inside.
