Loose or peeling plaster ceilings are common in older homes.
The first step is to remove all the loose plaster until you reach a solid surface. After that, the area is repaired and skim coated (usually 2 to3 coats) to make the ceiling smooth again.
If the plaster is very loose in a large area, sometimes the better option is to remove the damaged section and install new drywall, then finish it smooth.
We've repaired many loose plaster ceilings and smooth ceilings in Toronto and across the GTA. Every ceiling is different, so the best solution is usually a quick inspection to see how much of the plaster is loose.

An on-site assessment would be appropriate to determine whether the issue is failing plaster (peeling or flaking) or a coating failure.
If the plaster itself is deteriorating, the affected areas will need to be removed, properly repaired, allowed to dry, and refinished before priming & painting. If it is the paint or coating that is failing, we can scrape, sand, prime with the appropriate bonding or stain-block primer, and fully apply a new finish coat to restore the ceiling properly.
