Adding a Dishwasher to Kitchen

Anonymous user 12/05/2026 - 9:52 AM

How do I go about adding a dishwasher to my kitchen that never previously had one? I'm more than willing to have my kitchen drawers (where I want the dishwasher to go) be remove and have the dishwasher go there. But, does that mean I need to involve some sort of reno/demolition people? Once they are done, then do I need an electrician and a plumber to hook up the dishwasher? Would love to get some input on how to begin this project, the order of what to do/when to do it, and what to watch out for. Also, any input on what to look for in a dishwasher and any brands/things to stay away from? This is my first time buying a dishwasher. Thank you in advance for taking out your time to answer my questions. All advice is really appreciated!

Great question — this is a very common project and very doable! Here's how to approach it: Cabinet Removal No demolition crew needed. A general contractor or skilled handyman can remove the drawer unit cleanly. The target opening is typically 24" wide. Trades You'll Need Yes, both a plumber and an electrician are required. The plumber ties into your hot water supply and runs a short drain line to the sink. The electrician installs a dedicated 15-amp circuit — in Ontario, this requires an ESA permit and inspection. Order of Operations Cabinet removal → rough-in plumbing & electrical → dishwasher delivery → installation. What to Look for in a Dishwasher Noise level of 44 dB or lower Third rack for cutlery Soil sensor for efficiency Bosch is the go-to for reliability and performance. Miele is excellent but premium. Avoid entry-level units from brands not known for appliances. Watch Out For Confirm your drain has a high loop or air gap to prevent backflow, and check that your flooring extends under the dishwasher opening before installation. You can do this yourself, but I would not recommend to someone who is not familiar with both plumbing and electrical connections.

Yob need an electrician to tune a new line from the panel to the new dishwasher also pluming is required to hook up the dishwasher. You can check with the appliances store for what brand they will recommend. Hope this helps Hidri Contracting INC

Thanks for asking this question. In older home renos this project is carried out on a regular basis. #1. First measure the space to see if it can actually accommodate a new dishwasher. Custom kitchens can throw a surprise in there now and then. Dishwashers are typically just under 24" or the 18" option not so commonly used. #2. Ensure that there are proper shut off valves under the sink to make the transition easy as you will have to incorporate new plumbing for the dishwasher. Survey under the sink to see if you have an current obstructions as you will also have to drill a small hole to accommodate the drain line for the new appliance. #3. Consider the electrical. Some dishwashers require a new GFCI installed at the dishwasher location or they can be tied directly into the panel. #4. Check existing water source plumbing for accommodation of the new intake waterline. I've seen some very interesting setups! #5. Check the countertop underneath to see if installation brackets can be easily installed. Some countertops like quartz and granite are going to make this much more difficult. Installation brackets are important to secure the appliance secure and lessen any potential vibration. #6 Removal of the old cabinet. Most kitchens now have screws securing the cabinets to each other and it should be fairly simple to remove the unit. NOTE! Don't dispose of the cabinet right away just in case you find a reason why a dishwasher doesn't fit. #7 Shop for a new dishwasher. Look at the consumer ratings first. Choose accordingly consider the sones rating. Also known as sones. #8 Ensure licenced trades aka plumbers and electricians are used if you are not confident in your skill set. Also important to note, if you are in a condo corp or townhouse you may need approval before hand. Please review the rules and regs. #9 Good luck and get to work! If you have any other questions i'm here for you. Elaine @ Adeline Home

Yes, the drawers would need to be removed so that the space can accommodate the dishwasher. Once the drawers and the internal cabinet structure are removed, the opening needs to be checked to make sure it meets the standard dishwasher size. Most dishwashers require an opening that is approximately 24 inches wide, about 34–35 inches high, and around 24 inches deep. If the space is smaller, the cabinet may need to be modified slightly to make sure the dishwasher fits properly. For the electrical part, a new wire usually needs to be run to the dishwasher location. Dishwashers are typically hard-wired rather than plugged into an outlet. From the plumbing side, a dedicated water supply line needs to be installed for the dishwasher. This is usually taken from the water line under the kitchen sink. The dishwasher drain line also needs to be properly connected to the sink drain system to ensure it drains correctly and avoids any issues. As for dishwasher brands, unfortunately we can’t really make specific recommendations.

Adding a dishwasher to a kitchen that never had one is not just an upgrade… it’s a transformation of how your kitchen works behind the scenes. And here’s the powerful part: It’s absolutely doable — but only if you follow the right sequence. 💥 The truth most people don’t realize A dishwasher is not just an appliance. It’s a system connection between cabinetry, plumbing, and electrical. Miss one piece… and the whole thing struggles. 🔧 Step 1 — Create the space Yes, those drawers will need to go. But this is not demolition chaos. It’s controlled removal. A contractor or skilled handyman can: Remove the cabinet box cleanly Adjust the opening to standard size (around 24 inches wide) No major destruction — just precise modification. ⚡💧 Step 2 — Bring the kitchen to life This is where the real work happens. You will need: A plumber To connect hot water supply To run a drain line into your sink system An electrician To install a dedicated power line (Usually a 15-amp circuit, often inspected depending on local code) This is not optional. This is what makes the dishwasher function safely. 🧠 Step 3 — The order that makes everything smooth Get this right, and the project feels easy: Cabinet removal Plumbing and electrical rough-in Floor check (very important) Dishwasher delivery Final installation Get this order wrong… and you’ll redo work. ⚠️ What most people overlook This is where problems hide: Flooring If your floor does not extend under the new dishwasher space, you may lock the appliance in place forever Drain setup A proper high loop is critical to prevent dirty water from flowing back Countertop attachment Dishwashers must be secured — especially under stone like quartz or granite Space reality Not all cabinets are standard — always measure twice 🛒 Choosing the right dishwasher Forget marketing. Focus on what actually matters: Quiet operation (around 44 dB or lower feels premium) Third rack (game changer for cutlery and space) Soil sensors (efficiency + cleaner dishes) Brands that consistently deliver: Bosch — reliable, quiet, balanced Miele — top-tier, but expensive Avoid unknown budget brands that compromise on longevity. 🧱 Do you need a renovation crew? Not a full demolition team. But you do need the right mix of people: Handyman or contractor for cabinet work Licensed plumber Licensed electrician This is a coordinated job, not a one-person shortcut. 🔥 The mind-blowing perspective Right now, your kitchen was designed to live without a dishwasher. You’re not just adding one — you’re upgrading the entire system to support modern living. When done right: It looks like it was always meant to be there It works silently in the background It saves hours of effort every week 🏁 Final clarity Yes — remove the drawers Yes — involve plumber and electrician Yes — follow the correct order But more importantly: Don’t think of this as installing a machine Think of it as building a new function into your kitchen If you want, tell me your kitchen layout (where the sink is, cabinet size, condo or house), and I’ll map out the exact setup so you avoid surprises completely.

You don't need a full reno crew - just targeted trades in the right order. The Sequence: Remove the drawers - usually straightforward -> Plumber rough-in - runs hot water supply and drain to that location -> Electrician - installs a dedicated circuit / GFCI outlet -> Install the dishwasher - once utilities are in place The trades happen before installation. Don't install the dishwasher until water, drain, and power are ready. What Matters: Measure your opening first. Standard dishwashers are 24" wide. If your space is narrower, your options shrink and costs go up. Get a plumber on-site early. The cost depends entirely on where your water lines and drain are relative to the dishwasher location. If they're close (sink cabinet - next), it's straightforward. Coordinate the trades. Plumbing and electrical should be done together if possible -saves time and coordination effort. Dishwasher Selection: Avoid ultra-budget models -poor cleaning and short lifespan. Mid-tier options from established brands (Bosch, LG, Samsung, KitchenAid) are the sweet spot for reliability and performance. If your kitchen is open to living space, prioritize noise level - look for 45dB or quieter.
