Depending on what the material is, I would assume its concrete, I would use a masonry paint, or even a concrete stain.
Concrete Stain: Penetrates into the surface as concreteis porus it reacts with concrete to color it. You can get water based or acid based.
Masonry Paint: Coating formulated for porous masonry (block, brick, stucco, concrete). Its breathable, and alot more flexible.
Exterior Latex Paint is ok but latex sits on top of the surface so remember that for high traffic areas.
And remember PREP IS THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP!

Choosing porch paint is not about color.
Itās about survival under feet, weather, and time.
Your porch is one of the harshest environments in your home:
Sun beating down
Rain soaking in
Shoes grinding dirt day after day
So the ābest paintā is not just paint ā
itās a coating designed to take abuse and still look good.
š„ What actually makes a porch paint āthe bestā
Forget brand names for a second. Focus on this:
100% acrylic formula (flexible, doesnāt crack)
Floor-rated durability (made for walking, not just walls)
Mildew and moisture resistance
Slip-resistant or textured finish (huge safety upgrade)
Thatās why products like:
BEHR Premium Porch & Patio Floor Paint
Benjamin Moore Element Guard Exterior Paint
Sico Premium Exterior Paint and Primer
are commonly used ā theyāre built for exterior exposure and durability.
For example, BEHRās porch paint is specifically designed for wood and concrete and resists cracking, peeling, mildew, and scuffing ļæ½ ā exactly what a porch needs.
The Home Depot
š§ Best choices depending on your situation
For high-traffic porch floors
Go with a dedicated porch & floor paint (like BEHR Porch & Patio)
For railings and vertical wood
A high-quality exterior paint (Benjamin Moore / Sico) works great
For rough or older wood
Consider thicker coatings or solid stains for better coverage

ā Do you need primer?
Hereās the part most people get wrong:
Primer is not optional ā itās strategic.
You need primer if:
Bare wood is exposed
Old paint is peeling or sanded
Wood is porous or weathered
Primer locks the surface so paint can actually bond.
Without it, paint sits on top⦠and eventually lets go.
Even pros recommend cleaning, scraping, and priming before painting to ensure proper adhesion and durability ļæ½.
Better Homes & Gardens
š„ The mind-blowing truth
People obsess over āwhich paint is bestā
but ignore the one thing that decides everything:
Preparation
You can use the best paint in the world ā
and it will still fail on a poorly prepared surface.
But even a good paint, applied on a properly prepped surfaceā¦
can last years.
š Final clarity
If you want a no-regret choice:
Use a porch-specific acrylic floor paint for walking surfaces
Prime wherever the surface is raw or unstable
Prep like it matters ā because it does
Because porch paint doesnāt just sit thereā¦
it fights every day.
And the right choice doesnāt just look good ā
it **holds its ground.**
