Can I legally install a washing machine in my bathroom?
Anonymous user 12/11/2025 - 9:33 AM
Hello, I'm thinking about installing a washing machine in my bathroom. The plan is to run the power cable through a small hole in the wall to an outlet that's on the other side of the bathroom. The machine will be more than 1.2 metres from the edge of the tub and about half a metre from the toilet. Just wondering if this setup is up to code?

Yes . You can ask an electrician to do this. As your toilet has a water valve and its half meter far from your plug, Electrician will use a GFI Plug for following CEC.

Yes, it’s possible — but it must follow Ontario Electrical Code (CEC) requirements.
If the washing machine is more than 1.2 m away from the bathtub or shower, and the outlet is properly protected with a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter), then it can be installed legally.
You should:
✅ Have a licensed electrician install a dedicated 15 A or 20 A circuit for the washer.
✅ Use a GFCI outlet for safety.
✅ Make sure the plumbing (hot/cold water supply and drain) meets code and doesn’t risk backflow or leaks near electrical outlets.
It’s best to have a professional check the setup before installation to ensure it passes inspection.
