I cannot decide what to choose for my white shaker kitchen cabinet doors. If I should go with wood or MDF or HDF. Any advice would be appreciated

Since the doors would be finished in white, I would recommend that you use HDF. It is stronger and more water-resistant than MDF. MDF and HDF allow a much better paint finish than wood.

There are several types of Shaker: Slim Shaker, Traditional Shaker, and Double Shaker. MDF is a great product, provided that it is well made in Canada and not from China. The manufacturer must provide a good warranty of 10 years or greater. HDF is also a great product, as it is tougher than MDF; however, the same principles apply as stated above regarding where it is manufactured and the warranty.

Can Do More Painting – Renovation & Design

For a white shaker kitchen, most professionally finished cabinets today are MDF or HDF doors, not solid wood. That’s intentional, not a downgrade.
Here’s how each option really performs:
1. MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) – Most Common Choice
Best overall for painted white kitchens
-Very smooth surface → ideal for a clean painted finish
-Does not have grain → no lines showing through paint over time
-More stable than wood → less expansion and contraction
What this means for you:
Your white cabinets stay looking smooth and consistent for years without visible cracking at joints.
2. HDF (High Density Fiberboard) – Premium Upgrade
Stronger, denser version of MDF
-Even smoother and harder surface
-Better resistance to dents and wear
-Holds sharp shaker details really well
What this means for you:
If you want a slightly more durable, higher-end door, HDF is an excellent upgrade.
3. Solid Wood – Not Ideal for Painted White
Best for stained cabinets, not painted
-Natural wood expands and contracts with humidity
-Over time, you will often see:
-Hairline cracks at joints
-Slight movement at seams
This is a normal material behavior, not a defect. As noted in renovation guidance, material movement due to humidity is expected in natural products. On a white painted shaker door, those small movements become visible and can affect the clean look.
How we typically guide clients at Can Do More:
-Painted white kitchens: MDF or HDF doors
-Stained or natural wood look: Solid wood doors
This approach gives you the best balance of durability, appearance, and long-term performance.
Recommendation based on your situation:
If your goal is a clean, modern white shaker kitchen:
-Go with MDF as the standard
-Upgrade to HDF if you want a more premium, durable feel
