Like many things, it all depends. Rental hot water tanks are great if you don't have the money upfront to pay for a new tank, you want total peace of mind in the event there is an issue or you're a landlord and want to write-off the monthly payment. The main benefit is point two - total peace of mind that if something were to happen you are covered and a tech will be buy to fix the tank ASAP. Hope this helps.

If you have hard water, I would strongly suggest that you get a softner system installed at same time as well. (Or else if you dont, manufacturer may void warranty). And I would suggest to buy it right it if you can afford it. If you rent, you will end up paying for the unit 3 times and at the end if you wanted to keep it, you would need to pay an additional fee to keep the unit. Typically another $2000.
