Price for installing pot lights

Krystal 29/05/2026 - 1:02 PM

Just wanted some options on installing new pot lights throughout the house. Would permits also be required for this installation? There may be a possibility of installing a wired security system as well. thank you!

A permit is always needed: Any time you are adding new pot lights, installing new electrical circuits, cutting into ceilings, or altering existing wiring. When a permit is not needed: If you are simply replacing an existing, pre-wired light fixture with a new, exact "like-for-like" pot light on the same switch without running new wires. Generally Wired security system requires a permit except for low voltage, A permit for low voltage voice, data, video, or alarm systems is not needed for: Installations in a single detached house. Wireless security camera or alarm system s, i.e., plug and play systems that d o not require any wiring or electrical raceways other than plugging into an existing electrical wall outlet. Beware when contractors are willing to skip the permit

Hi there, Here, a permit is required when pot lights are added to an existing circuit or when any new wiring is installed. Each province has its own rules, so the best approach is to confirm directly with your local city or permitting office in Alberta to make sure everything is compliant. For pot lights, the way Alberta handles permits is pretty similar to Ontario. If you’re cutting new holes, running new cable, or extending an existing circuit, the work falls under “new wiring” and a permit is required through the local authority (City of Edmonton, Safety Codes Council, etc.). The only time a permit wouldn’t be needed is when you’re doing a straight like‑for‑like fixture swap on the existing wiring with no circuit changes. So the idea that “no permit is needed if it’s just pot lights” only applies when it’s literally a fixture replacement — anything involving new wiring or circuit extension needs a permit in Alberta.

Pot light installation costs can vary quite a bit depending on the house layout, attic access, ceiling type, and how many lights are being added. In most cases here in BC, homeowners usually pay somewhere around $150–$300 per pot light installed, especially if new wiring needs to be run. As for permits, it really depends on the scope of the work and local requirements. If you’re adding new wiring or new circuits, a permit is often required and the work should be done by a licensed electrician. For simpler installations using existing wiring, some smaller jobs may not require one, but it’s always better to confirm with your local municipality or electrician directly. If you’re also thinking about a wired security system, it’s actually a good time to do both together since the electrician can run everything at once while ceilings or walls are accessible. That usually saves time and labour in the long run.
