Yes, you can replace vinyl with tile, but the subfloor prep is critical—it has to be perfectly level and solid to prevent cracking. Regarding costs, laminate is definitely cheaper than ceramic once you factor in all the thin-set, backer boards, and labor for tiling.

Yes, vinyl flooring can definitely be removed and replaced with ceramic tile. The main thing is making sure the subfloor underneath is solid, level, and properly prepared before installation — that’s what really determines how long the tile will last without cracking.
Laminate flooring is usually the more budget-friendly option overall, both for material and installation costs. Ceramic tile tends to cost more because of the prep work, mortar, grout, and labour involved. That said, tile is great for areas exposed to moisture or heavy traffic, especially with Canadian weather bringing in water, snow, and dirt during winter months.
Here in British Columbia, a lot of homeowners go with laminate or vinyl for main living areas because it’s warmer and more comfortable underfoot, while ceramic tile is often preferred for bathrooms, kitchens, and entryways for durability and water resistance.
