How do I attach wooden fence panels to concrete posts without grooves?

Anonymous user 10/11/2025 - 9:55 AM

I'm trying to replace my old wire fence with wooden panels but I want to keep the existing concrete posts. Some additional info: - They don't have grooves to slot panels in. - They don't have holes at the front so I can't just drill through the wood and bolt them on - There are holes on the sides where the wire links through to the next section. - The posts are more boundary markers than proper fence posts. I can't drill new holes. So, is there a way to attach wooden panels with the current setup? What should I look for in a wooden panel to make this work? What kind of screws or bolts would I need? Could I attach something horizontally and then fix the wooden panels to that instead? Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Since your concrete posts don’t have grooves and you can’t drill into them, you’ll need to create a frame or bracket system that allows your wooden panels to be mounted securely without modifying the posts. Option 1: Use Fence Post Brackets or U-Clamps • Look for heavy-duty fence post brackets or U-shaped metal clamps that can wrap around the concrete post. • These brackets can be tightened using anchor bolts or sleeve bolts that grip around the post instead of going through it. • Once the bracket is secured, screw your wooden rails (horizontal battens) onto the brackets and then attach your fence panels to those rails. What to buy: • Adjustable U-bolts or post clamps (galvanized steel to resist rust) • Timber rails (pressure-treated 2x4 or similar) • Exterior wood screws or decking screws ⸻ Option 2: Build a Free-Standing Timber Frame Between Posts If your posts are more like boundary markers than load-bearing supports, consider: • Installing wooden posts or timber uprights directly between each pair of concrete posts, using post supports or concrete anchors fixed to the ground. • Then, fix your panels to the wooden frame as normal. This method doesn’t rely on the concrete posts for strength—it simply keeps the fence line straight and visually aligned. ⸻ Option 3: Use Metal Fixing Straps • Buy galvanized metal fixing straps (also called band straps or universal fixing plates). • Wrap or screw these straps around the post (if it has side holes or indents) and use them to hold horizontal battens in place. • Fix your panels onto those battens.
