How soon can I paint freshly plastered walls?

Anonymous user 03/02/2026 - 9:47 AM

My partner asked the drywall installer how long we should wait before painting the freshly skim-coated walls. He said three days but I think a couple of weeks!! Any advice?

Are you a pro and able to answer this question?

If the walls are drywall, it should be ready for paint as soon as the final sanding of joint compound has occurred. One coat non tinted primer, two coats paint, is industry standard. Find the primer at the store that is marked "For New Drywall." If walls are plaster applied to a different substrate, dry times may be longer depending on site conditions. Hope this helps 🙂

I would say between 3-4 days. Make sure you have some circulation of air, and it’ll be ready within then.

As long as the walls are prepped properly (sanded ) it can be primed straightaway …then wait do final touchups if needed …then paint 2 coats of course Mandatory!!!!!

There are many factors that to determines when the walls are ready for paint after the last coat of mud has been sanded. What type of coating had been used. Fast drying, regular cure time? Whats is the humidity level in the room? How is the ventilation in the space and what temperature is the room kept at? Generally it should be ready to paint whitin a day or 2 considerring that houses are dryer in the winter, assuming there's good air flow. After it's totally dry 2 coats primer and 2 coats of paint for a complete coverage. Also the quality of the paint, the brushes and the Roller affects the overall quality of the job. MY advice, Don't buy dollar store rollers or brushes or you might end up with hair and lint in your paint job.
