We hired Toronto Home Painters to paint our basement and the walls leading up the stairs to our second floor. We choose a basic grey and had two teal accent walls. We had a gentleman come to our home to do a walk through, he did a presentation on their services and we were impressed with what he had to say, perhaps it was here that my expectations did not align with the actual outcome of the project. We were quoted it would take around 6 days and that there would be a team of a couple of men painting in our home. Project day one, and through the entire project as far as we can tell they had one guy painting in our home.
The project started in our basement, we were told that any imperfections in our walls would be fixed prior to painting, we had new furniture delivered a week prior to the painting job and were promised that everything would be covered. We took the time to move all our furniture to the middle of the space to make this easier. While checking on the progress we did notice that sheeting was covering all our furniture.
Three days later, we were advised the basement was finished with two coats of paint on all walls, the covering of the furniture was removed and the basement "lightly" cleaned. We took a walk through and were surprised at all the imperfections in the paint coverage. We changed are ceilings from white to light grey and in several areas it was clear that the roller was swiped over the section once as the white clearly showed through. A closer look at the walls (we were changing them from a light brown to a light grey) the brown showed through so strongly in areas that it was impossible to believe that they painted the walls twice.
Our pot lights were not taped and/or removed so that the edges around them could be painted cleanly.
We left several sticky notes and a request that they paint another coat of paint in the basement. They obliged and agreed another coat of paint would fix the problem (we were still happy customers at this point, we understand sometimes paint may need another layer etc)
This third coat was done in a rush, our furniture was not covered we found grey paint on our book cases, grey speckles of paint on our brand new sections, dust from sanding as the imperfections in the walls were not taken care of prior to painting, there was a layer of dust everywhere, not to mention all the paint splatters that covered our floor.
The walls leading up to the second floor were to be painted in the same grey and one teal accept wall. The imperfections on these walls were completely ignored and just slopped paint on the wall. the edges were not clean, the baseboards were not taped nor covered that they were speckled with both grey and teal paint. There were several spots on our banister that had teal paint smudged on them. There was a hair left in the paint at eye level, not to mention other particles that were left to dry and stand out. When the gentleman returned to remove the hair and the some of the particles he said he would have to do another coat of teal paint on the wall, he painted this, along with repainting our baseboards and the caulking the edges in a brown caulking (this cleaned up the edges along the baseboard nicely, my question is why this was not done as part of the job and not until we complained and request he come back to fix it?)
He left and we spent the better part of the whole day cleaning paint from the basement floor, vacuuming dust off our new couch and trying to remove teal paint drops from our light brown carpet as the last coat of teal paint on the stairs was done so quickly with little regard to covering the floor.
The man to completed this job was nice, he was very pleasant to talk to, we left him notes with requests to help fix a few areas which caught our eye from the previous painters or that we may have marked up and he took care of all our requests.
We communicated our concerns with the company and while they were a little slow to respond they did get back in touch with us. Ultimately I would have appreciated if a project lead would have come to our house to inspect the quality of work (we did send the photos so they could see the concerns we had)
In the end, we are happy with the paint job on the walls, however disappointed in the care and attention to ensure that paint only went on the walls and not everywhere else.
