Repair a frozen pipe that burst

First, I called the dispatcher at Mr. Rooter on Jan 9 evening about a water pipe that burst in the garage and unfortunately leaked into the basement. The technician promptly gave me a call in 20 minutes giving me an appointment in the afternoon the next day. To my pleasant surprise, the dispatcher gave me a good news that a technician was available in the morning. Great news because my main water valve was shut due to a pipe burst so the earlier we have water back, the better. Josh, our technician arrived on time and started his thorough investigation for the pipe burst location. He also went through the pricing with us before initiating any work. Everything was fixed to our satisfaction. He took his time in providing very helpful comments to avoid future problems. I would recommend Mr. Rooter to others. All in all, a positive experience from start to finish.

    pipe thawed

How very interesting that I am not alone in my experience. Make sure to read for other reviewers and their situation, which is almost exactly the same as my own. Let's start with this...... $400 an hour pricing? Honestly this is disgusting. The company is taking FULL advantage of the recent ice storm and freezing temperatures (Jan 2014). The technician was in and out of my home within 45 minutes, to thaw a very small section of frozen pipe. The technician was also very close to abusive with their extremely rude manner, dodging any answer to my reasonable and straightforward questions (why so much for this call? etc...). I spoke to a representative after my experience, and they offered no remorse or reasonable explanation for their pricing, or even apologies for their technicians behaviour. Where are we in society when we allow companies such as this to take such full advantage of people in need? Never again Mr. Rooter, well.... there's no use using Mr. with you as that is a sign of respect, and respect is certainly something you do not deserve.

    Frozen Pipe Repair

First the positives. I called Mr. Rooter at 6:50pm and a technician was here by 8:15pm to fix a frozen pipe. It took him less than 15 minutes to thaw out the pipe. For that I paid $450. I think telling a homeowner that it will take 2 hours minimum to thaw a pipe and $450 when the pipe is frozen and not re-negotiating the price when the pipe is thawed in 5 minutes (then 10 min of hot water running to check for leaks) is unconscionable. I felt I had been taken for a ride by being told it would take much longer and felt duped into signing papers saying that I would pay out $450 before the work began. When my pipe is frozen and I feel like I have little choice and no knowledge, the power is with the plumber. Tonight, I felt this power was abused. So for this reason, I would not recommend this company to others. Addendum: the company's response of "two minutes or two hours" is false. The technician never said this. Also, he said in response to my query about the two hours and coverage that if the pipe had burst, there would be extra charges, over the two hours worth that I had already paid. I am sorry that the company is not being honest in their reply.

    Answer from pro:

Dear Mr. Mahadevan: During this freezing weather we are working around the clock to get people’s pips thawed before they burst and cause water damage in their homes. We have fielded literally hundreds of calls just like yours and do our level best to provide a good and fair service in a timely manner. We truly appreciate your positive feedback regarding our response time of two hours. We would, however, like to revisit the service call and pricing with you. When our plumbing technician arrived he explained to you that our list price to thaw your pipes would be $403.92 plus tax and our standard $15 fuel charge. He also explained that it could take “two minutes or two hours “ and he could not be sure which it was in your case. You agreed to the minimum charge and initialed the work order with that understanding. Fortunately, in your case, the pipes were flowing after 15 minutes and there were no leaks detected so you were spared the water damage that many people are facing right now. Unfortunately, we have no control over what the government charges in HST which was $54.45, and our fuel charge of $15 is standard. Thus the $473.87 charge that was your final bill. I’m sure you are aware that in every profession there are fees and though we understand that no one likes to pay for services, our people deserve to be paid a decent wage for the hours they work, even more so in a time of crisis, when they are working around the clock to serve the good people of Toronto. The fifteen minutes that it took to thaw your pipes is only a part of the job process. The driving time, vehicle expense, equipment expense, office and plumbing staff, phone systems, heat, light, internet and advertising so you can find us, are expenses related to operating a company and are all a part of what every customer must realize in their final payment. I would like to thank you for your review because each review, whether good or bad, gives us the opportunity to interface with our customers and, if necessary, explain ourselves. It is always a good exercise and helps us to improve our service.

    Clogged toilet

I was very impressed with the service I received from Mr. Rooter from start to finish. They returned my call very promptly and were very professional and polite on the phone. They provided me with a Sunday appointment at a convenient time for me. The plumber who attended, Rick Phillips, was excellent. He clearly knew what he was doing and was very patient and explained the problem to me and how to avoid it in the future. I never felt rushed and definitely was very happy with the service. I would use Mr. Rooter again for any plumbing issue and would highly recommend them!

I had a lot of problems with burst pipes over the Christmas holidays and I have to say Will Vincent from Mr. Rooter did alot to make the experience way more palatable. He was extremely helpful, courteous and went the extra mile to get me what I needed no matter what time of the day or night. I would not hesitate to call on Will ever again if I (God forbid) have anymore plumbing issues...Thanks Will, you are the best.

    Clean clogged drain

Very impressed with the whole service. The whole team from the call centre, to the dispatcher, and the plumber were very professional. The dispatcher kept me up to date on the arrival time of the plumber which helped as I was running errands. The plumber was excellent and provided me with all the details of his work. He explained the cause and showed me on the camera where the issue was. He cleared the drain and it's back to normal.

    plumbing

On December 25th after being away from our house due to a power outage for three days we returned home to find out our pipes are frozen due to severe cold. I called Mr. Rooter and a couple of hours later a young man by the name of Justin Robinson knocked on our door. He confirmed that the pipes were in fact frozen and he suggested to have them defrosted which I agreed and he went on with the process. He also brought to my attention that the main valve is leaking very badly, which I was already aware of. He suggested we call the City of Toronto to come and shut off the main water. Which we did. He also advised me if the water is shut off not too late he will come back and fix the valve so I am not without water over night. He finished defrosting the pipes and left. Not too long after Justin leaving the city came and shut off the water. I called your office and I was told it would be next morning before somebody can come over to change the valve. I advised the lady that Justin had offered to come back and change the valve tonight. Ten minutes later I received a call from Justin that he will be at my house in five minutes. Sure enough he came changed the valve and made sure I have water before leaving my house. The level of service I received from this young man was well over my expectations. He was polite and very profesional. When I thanked him before he left his response to me was, "Mr. Rooter is a great company and I want to make sure all the customers are satisfied". This response just confirmed to me that this young man is proud of his work and the company he works for.

    Installed a new sink

We had Rick Phillips come to deal with a bathroom sink that wouldn't drain. We were very pleased with his work. He was prompt, courteous, and went out of his way to make sure we had a sink that worked on the same day, even though it meant that he had to whip out to a plumbing store on New Year's eve and get a sink just before they closed. Also he had lots of helpful tips on what to do to keep our plumbing running well.
