    Clear drain; Replace faucet

The main reason I ended up using this company is because they were able to come on short notice and the plumber would review work with me and take instructions from me over the phone (other companies insisted I be at home, and would not accept our nanny being there). The work was also well done. That kind of service is hard to find. But it comes at a cost - they are definitely not cheap. Having said that, I will still use them again because I think their service is worth the cost.

    External BackWater Valve Installation

To help prevent basement flooding, we wanted to add an external backwater valve. The work required Public Plumbing to dig a 9 ft deep pit in our front yard to reach the existing sanitary pipe, install a new plastic pipe and valve, test the pipe/valve, coordinate with the city inspector to come on-site, then backfill the pit. Public Plumbing was excellent to deal with -- they showed up on time and completed the work as promised and it easily passed inspection! [Note: I understand they are well known by the city inspectors for their good work] They were reliable, courteous and hard working. A special thanks to Mike who coordinated the job -- he is knowledgeable and was easy to deal with -- he explained everything that needed to be done and ensured the job was done right. Will definitely spread the good word!

    Backwater Valve

Very satisfied with the service provided by Public Plumbing and the professionalism of Mike and his crew. They installed a backwater valve in the basement utility room. Despite some plumbing anomalies in our home they got the job done and walked me through the installation options to make the best decision. Initially Mike came by to provide a quote and walk me through the project and I was impressed they were able to coordinate and schedule the work to start the next day.

    Second Time

I used this company in the past, and was very happy with the work. This time I needed the main drain inspected, as we have a house from 1890 equipped with a building trap, which are prone to fail. The company representative was very friendly, appeared competent, and very responsive. The problem: he advised me to open up the whole basement in order to replace 32 feet of drain pipe (PVC to replace clay), and this for three reasons: (1) connection from new PVC pipe to old clay pipe (made by previous owner when finishing the basement) is not great. (2) some roots in main drain (from a tree that was removed by the city including stump three years ago). (3) you cannot go from 6 inch to 4 inch back to 6 inch in diameter (old clay pipe is 6 inch, and the installation of the back-water valve required use of 4 inch pipe to be put in place once building trap is removed). Overall estimated cost: $6000 plus HST plus all the costs resulting from re-doing part of the basement. I had a hard time believing that this advise is more in my interest and less in the interest of the plumbing company the person represented who gave me that advise). Since camera inspections are costly, I wondered if one is expected to pay two or three company each $300 in order to satisfy the principle of competition among companies for the job in question and to make sure the person's advise is sound. Public plumbing also advised me against hiring another company to do a camera inspection (since the issue with the drain are so obvious that everyone would come to the same conclusion); but offered that I use the report he left me stating the condition of our drain pipe with other companies when soliciting more estimates. I decided to hire another company to perform a camera inspection (someone who does not do plumbing but only camera inspection). That person contradicted everyone Public Plumbing's representative stated. That is: (1) the PVC to clay connection is what is the norm (it is often not the case that the connection is great due to the differences in material (clay versus PVC, resulting is some moving and thus part mismatch). (2) roots can be monitored and if necessary snaked. (3) it is possible to go from 6 inch to 4 inch to 6 inch. That person advised me, however, to take out the trap, since they are prone to fail and cannot be monitored (the camera cannot go into the building trap. That is why I did. I found a company to replace the trap exactly the way I was advised it was possible. Overall costs: $2373, including the installation of an outside backwater valve (with $1250 to be reimbursed from the City of Toronto as it passed inspection). That means, actual cost: $1123. In conclusion: I don't think those should inspect your main drain who benefit from poor (even if well intended (who doesn't prefer the best possible main drain in the universe)) advise resulting from the inspection. Every home improvement decision home owners have to make is a compromise, and Public Plumbing did not help me in making the most reasonable decision.

Dear K-Family, we thank you for your time and honesty in leaving us this review and we are sorry to hear that you are disappointed with the consultation provided by our technician. Our company offers free consultations for underground drain repair (this does not include camera inspections) and our technicians provide the various options open to you and best advise according to code. The options provided to you are the best to protect your basement from back ups and reoccurring problems and are the most correct repair to have the best functioning drainage system, which can be more costly than an easy fix. As you have stated above, our technician let you know that you are free to discuss with other companies (and as he had already done the camera inspection you would be able to provide the make up of your drainage system to the other company), which is what you have done and have chosen to go with someone else to make a repair which is at your discretion. We are very sorry that you feel this way about our consultation and would love any opportunity in the future to turn that 6 into a 10! Thanks again!

    Kichen renovation

Paul from Public Plumbing was helping us with the kitchen renovation plumbing services. We need to install a dishwasher and the existing old pipes were in the way. Paul reassured us it could easily be fixed, and it was! He moved and upgraded the pipes, and connected the dishwasher. Everything was done with high quality, even thought it was not a trivial task in out house that is almost 100 years old! Paul is a great professional and a great person, a pleasure to deal with. He will be our plumber of choice for any future projects!

    Basement toilet issues

Our basement toilet had a backflow issue which looked serious. Mike from Public Plumbing responded quickly and was at the house shortly thereafter. He identified the tree roots causing the problem, cleared out enough to get water flowing properly for the short-term, and set up the repair service for the following day. Two men from Public Plumbing appeared on time and finished the job (digging out a small section of our basement floor and replacing pipes) within several hours. Very impressed with the polite, prompt, knowledgeable approach, especially from Mike, and would use this service again.

    plugged drain

Great, fast service. When other companies said it would be two days. This company pushed to come right away. I did find it a bit expensive but know it was not super simple because of my piping. Will probably call again to have my piping realigned.

    Kitchen sink leak.

Although this was a small job, it was treated with respect and importance. Paul, the plumber, called ahead to give me his ETA and arrived within the time stated. He had all the necessary parts in his van and made a quick and thorough repair within 20 minutes. He was pleasant and efficient, his work was clean and my sink no longer leaks. This is the second time I've used Public Plumbing and would do so again as well as recommend their friendly and competent service.

    bathroom sink and faucet replacement

Looking for a good contractor, be it a plumber, electrician or anything else, is always a bit daunting to us. One is looking for honesty and reliability in a time of need and it is very much appreciated when it is found. That is what I found in Public Plumbing. Paul, who came to our house, was very helpful, easy going and professional. He was very flexible to arrange for repeated visits to coincide with some other work going on in our house. He did an excellent work, provided lots of advice and in the end did more work than what we originally discussed. I highly recommend Public Plumbing. There will be more plumbing work in our house in the future and I will be calling them.

    Answer from pro:

Dear George, thank you for taking the time to leave us a review! We appreciate your feedback and are very glad to hear that you are happy with the service provided to you by Paul. Please don't hesitate to call us in the future! Thank you again!

    Shower Repair

We had had a previous bad experience with a different company, so it was a pleasure to deal with a straightforward business!! I initially contacted Public Plumbing's service department and explained both my plumbing issue (requirement for a new shower valve) and my previous bad experience with a different company. The Service Department could not have been more helpful, and said that they would get a plumber to call me back so that he could clarify what was required. Within 45 minutes I was called back by Phil, who listened carefully and gave me a price indication (which he said he would need to verify when he saw the problem). He was straightforward and gave me good advice over the phone. He arrived exactly on time the next morning, and cut out the valve and replaced it. He had to cut into the drywall but tried hard to minimise the size if the hole. The job was completed without fuzz or incident and has been problem free so far. The work was warrantied for one year, which showed more faith in their workmanship than some other companies!. Not only was the work completed well, but Phil gave me an education on plumbing matters and other issues. Genuinely a pleasure! Public Plumbing are not the cheapest plumber around, nor do they pretend to be, but from my perspective they offer tremendous value an a friendly and worry free way. The end price was exactly what had been predicted. Would I use them again? Most certainly.

    Answer from pro:

Dear Jeremy, thank you so much for your kind words and review! We are sure that working with you was a pleasure for Phil also. We're very glad he was able to help you and also to give you advice for your plumbing. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you ever require any service in the future and we appreciate any recommendation to family and friends. We thank you again!
